Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon began filming earlier this year in Los Angeles, and while there’s been a considerable amount of interest in the horror film, it has spent a fair amount of time searching for a studio to distribute. Amazon Studios has emerged to do just that, as they have added the film to their growing slate of original movies set for theatrical release and early-window distribution on Amazon Prime Instant Video.
Directed by Refn (Drive, Only God Forgives) from a script he co-wrote with Mary Laws, The Neon Demon features a cast that includes Elle Fanning (Maleficent), Jena Malone (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1), Karl Glusman (Stonewall), Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows), Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road), Desmond Harrington (“Dexter,” “Gossip Girl”) Christina Hendricks (Drive), and Keanu Reeves (John Wick, The Matrix series).
In the film, when aspiring model Jesse (Fanning) moves to Los Angeles, her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has.
“One morning, I woke and realized I was both surrounded and dominated by women. Strangely, a sudden urge was planted in me to make a horror film about vicious beauty,” said Refn about the genesis of the film.
Gaumont and Wild Bunch co-financed and are co-handling international sales on The Neon Demon. Amazon will release the film next summer. In the meantime, check out a newly released photo of Elle Fanning in the film, below.
