After having revealed the first look at Pennywise last month, Entertainment Weekly is back with more from the big-screen adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, IT. This time the outlet shares a new photo showing the the sinister clown – portrayed by Swedish actor Bill Skarsgård (Netflix’s “Hemlock Grove”, The Divergent Series: Allegiant – in full costume.
As you can see below, the form-fitting suit draws inspiration from the Medieval, Renaissance, Elizabethan, and Victorian eras.
“The costume definitely incorporates all these otherworldly past lives, if you will. He is definitely a clown from a different time,” says Emmy-winning costume designer Janie Bryant (“Deadwood,” “Mad Men”). “There is almost a doll-like quality to the costume,” Bryant continued. “The pants being short, the high waistline of the jacket, and the fit of the costume is a very important element. It gives the character a child-like quality.”
Skarsgård previously stated: “It’s such an extreme character. Inhumane. It’s beyond even a sociopath, because he’s not even human. He’s not even a clown. I’m playing just one of the beings It creates.”
In addition to the new costume and makeup, we also learned in July that the film’s timeline will be altered from the one found in the book, which alternates back and forth between the late 1950s and the mid-1980s. Instead, the film will reportedly be released in two parts, with the first part taking place in the 80s as the evil titular being terrorizes the “Losers Club,” a group of young misfits looking for acceptance in the fictional town of Derry, Maine. The second part would then take place in present day and would find the children as adults as they attempt to abolish the evil for good.
Directed by Andy Muschietti (best known for the 2013 horror Mama), the first segment is set to bow on September 8, 2017, and star Skarsgård opposite Owen Teague (“Bloodline”), Jaeden Lieberher (Midnight Special), Jack Dylan Grazer (Tales of Halloween), Wyatt Oleff (Guardians of the Galaxy), Chosen Jacobs (Cops and Robbers), and Jeremy Ray Taylor (Ant-Man).
